Shipwreck Hiking & Canoe Trails would like to invite keen Birders to experience the many bird species in our area. The area between Port Alfred & Fish River has excellent bird species as this area covers Coastal Estuaries & Wetlands, Riverine Forest, Coastal Dunes, Freshwater Pans, Riet River & Kleinemonde West River, Fish River wetlands, Farmlands, Valley Thickets and Eastern Cape Fynbos.
Drive in and spend a few days at our rustic hikers’ overnight accommodation at Umgwenya Farmhouse, Milkwood Hut, Umtunzi Riet River Hut, 3-Sisters Hut, Lilypad Hut or  Simplicity Lodge in Nyala Valley Game Reserve, and Stone Cottage.
The Sunshine Coast is situated around the greater Port Alfred area from the Fish River to Bathurst inland, down the coast as far as Alexandria.
The Sunshine Coast Tourism Board, along with Tim Cockcroft, FGASA-accredited bird guide, as well as Local Birding Clubs, put together a list of over 400 bird species, including those that migrate over the years. Some species being the African Finfoot, Green-Backed Heron, Kingfishers, Fish Eagles, Blue-cheeked Bee-eaters, Dark-backed Weavers & 3-banded Plovers. The elusive Narina Trogon, which is vocal from September until February, during the mating season, can be heard frequently while visitors canoe on the Riet River or hike in the forest ravines.
See how many bird species you can find from our list and map of huts, which we will supply.
