We have FOUR hiking trail options available.

LEADERS TO ENSURE A MINIMUM OF 4 HIKERS PER GROUP, MAX 12 HIKERS PER GROUP.

OPTION 1 – Port Alfred to Fish River (click OPTION 1 for details)

Hike from Port Alfred East Beach all the way up the coast to Fish River. (Excluding the canoe trail) 5 Days and 4 Nights. – approximately 57 km
Staying overnight at Milkwood hut, Umtunzi River hut, 3-sisters hut and Stone Cottage.

MINIMUM AGE FOR THIS TRAIL IS 8 YEARS OLD.

OPTION 2 – Port Alfred to Fish River (click OPTION 2 for details)

Hike from Port Alfred East Beach all the way up the coast to Fish River with an extra night excursion where you canoe +/- 8km up the Kleinemonde West River and a 4km hike to spend the night at Lily Pad hut. 6 Days and 5 Nights. – approx 67 km hike & 16 km canoe (return)
Staying overnight at Milkwood hut, Umtunzi River hut, 3-sisters hut, Lily pad hut and Stone Cottage.

MINIMUM AGE FOR THIS TRAIL IS 10 YEARS OLD.
DUE TO THE EXTREME WINDS OFTEN EXPERIENCED AT THE COAST, ANYONE 16 YEARS AND YOUNGER, MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY AN ADULT IN THE LARGE DOUBLE CANOES.

It is possible to hike to Lily Pad Hut if an adult is not available to accompany the 10 – 16-year-old youngsters in the canoes.

OPTION 3 – Kleinemonde West River Canoe Trail (click OPTION 3 for details)

Start at the Kleinemonde West River mouth and canoe +/- 8km up the river. Hike +/- 4km into Nyala Game Reserve (no dangerous game) and spend the night at the Lily Pad hut. 2 Days and 1 Night. – +/- 8km hike & 16 km canoe (return)

MINIMUM AGE FOR THIS TRAIL IS 10 YEARS OLD.
DUE TO THE EXTREME WINDS OFTEN EXPERIENCED AT THE COAST, ANYONE 16 YEARS AND YOUNGER, MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY AN ADULT IN THE LARGE DOUBLE CANOES.


A portage service for the canoe, Option 3, is available upon request.

OPTION 4 – Birdwatching Drive-Ins & Overnighting (click OPTION 4 for details)

Shipwreck Hiking & Canoe Trails would like to invite keen Birders to experience the many bird species in our area. The area between Port Alfred & Fish River has an excellent variety of bird species, as it encompasses Coastal Estuaries and Wetlands, Riverine Forests, Coastal Dunes, Freshwater Pans, the Riet River & Kleinemonde West River, Fish River Wetlands, Farmlands, Valley Thickets, and Eastern Cape Fynbos.

PLEASE NOTE

  • All our trails are ‘self-guided’.
  • Please make sure that you come prepared with all your own food, beverages, toiletries, utensils, torches, matches and sleeping bags. (Bring your own toilet paper!)
  • All huts have drinking water, toilets & mattresses. Lily Pad has a donkey boiler for hot water for the shower (wood supplied). There are indoor and outdoor showers at the Three Sisters hut. Stone Cottage is very comfortable with a kitchen, bathroom and electricity.
  • Braai wood is supplied free of charge at all huts.

Pre- & Post-Trail Accommodation

If you need accommodation before the trail, we offer Umgwenya Farmhouse at an extra cost.
Vehicles are parked at the END of the trail, at the Fish River Caravan Park, for R100 per vehicle, to be paid to the Caravan Park owners.
